Role of AI in Healthcare

Posted By :Keshav Agarawal |28th February 2020

AI simplifies the patient's life, doctors and hospital administrators with performing tasks that are actually done by humans, but in less time as well as at a fraction of the cost.

From a survey it has been analyzed that AI sector was valued at about $600 million in 2014 and is assume to reach a $150 billion in 2026.

AI has many applications in healthcare which are countless. Whether it is being used in to discover links between to power surgical robots, genetic codes or even to maximize hospital efficiency, AI has been a boon to the healthcare sector.

a.) EFFICIENTLY DIAGNOSE AND REDUCE ERROR USING AI:

Artificial Intelligence can predict and diagnose the disease at a faster rate than most medical professionals can do. There is one case study for this, AI model is using deep learning  algorithms to diagnosed breast cancer at a higer rate than 11 pathologists. So it is efficient to diagnose and reduce the number of errors in diagnosis.

1. ACCURATE CANCER DIAGNOSIS WITH AI - PATHAI:

PathAI is working with drug developers such as Bristol-Myers Squibb and organizations such as Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to expand its Artificial Intelligence technology into other healthcare industries. PathAI is currently developing ML technology to assist pathologists in making more accurate diagnoses.

2. INTELLIGENT SYMPTOM CHECKER - BUOY HEALTH:

It is an AI-based symptom and cure checker that uses algorithms to diagnose and treat illness. A chatbot basically listens to a patient’s health concerns and symptoms, then guides the patient to care based on its diagnosis report.

3. DEEP LEARNING FOR ACTIONABLE INSIGHTS - ENLITIC:

It develops deep learning tools to streamline radiology diagnoses. Deep learning platform of the company analyzes unstructured medical data such as radiology images,  genomics, blood tests and EKGs patient medical history to give doctors insight into a real-time needs of patient.

4. EARLIER CANCER DETECTION WITH AI - FREENOME:

It uses AI in diagnostic tests, screenings, and blood work to test cancer. General screenings, Freenome aims to detect cancer by deploying AI at in its earliest stages and as well as develop new treatments.

b.) DEVELOPING NEW MEDICINES WITH AI :

One of the biggest breakthroughs of AI in drugs development came into 2007, when researchers tasked a robot and given a name Adam with researching functions of the yeast. Eve, a robot friend of Adam,  discovered that triclosan is a common ingredient in toothpaste that can combat malaria-based parasites. Because of breakthroughs in the technology, the biopharmaceutical companies are quickly noticing the efficiency, accuracy and knowledge that AI can provide.

1. IN BIOPHARMACEUTICAL DEVELOPMENT - BIOXCEL THERAPEUTICS:

It uses Artificial Intelligence to identify and develop new medicines in the fields of immuno-oncology and neuroscience. It work in AI-based drug development that was named as one of the “Most Innovative Healthcare AI Developments of 2019.

2. TREATING RARE DISEASE WITH AI - BERG HEALTH:

It  is a clinical-stage and AI-based biotech platform where it maps diseases to accelerate the discovery and development of breakthrough in the imedicines. They used Artificail Intelligence to find the links between chemicals in human body that was previously unknown — at the Neuroscience 2018 conference.

3. FINDING BETTER CANDIDATES FOR DEVELOPMENTAL DRUGS - DEEP GENOMICS:

This is an AI platform that helps researchers and find candidates for drugs development related to neurodegenerative  and neuromuscular disorders. It is also working on Project Saturn which analyzes over 69 billion cell compounds and it provides researchers with the feedback.

c.) MINING AND MANAGING MEDICAL DATA WITH AI:

Healthcare is considered as one of the next big data frontiers to tame. It provides highly valuable information that can sometimes get lost among the forest of trillions of data points. Many in healthcare industry are turning to the artificial intelligence technology as the way to stop the data hemorrhaging. The technology breaks down into data silos and connects in minutes information that can used to take years to process. The company is developes AI tools that can collect and analyze these data in everything from genetic sequencing to the image recognition, and that can give physicians better insights to look into the treatments and cures. IBM Watson is currently applying its skills into everything from personalized health plans to the interpreting genetic testing results and then catching early signs of disease.
